The skills are taught through a number of skillset themes.

Sessions will consist of one or more skillset themes

depending on the need of the training.

Trainers can use a range of activities to

teach the skills. It is important to

understand that the goal is the

achievement of the skillset theme

and that the activities are

merely the means to reach

that goal.

The themes are presented in no particular order of importance.

ENGAGE/ PARTICIPATE/

SHARE/ EXPRESS

  • Don’t rely on standard forms of responding and participating

  • Facilitate various forms of participation

IDENTIFYING 

MECHANISMS OF 

EXCLUSION

  • Understand the perspective of dominant and the other

  • Become aware of mechanisms that are used to exclude or silence

  • Role of conditioning and not-noticing

POSITIONALITY

  • Learn to identify one’s (b)earth position as an outcome of a particular modern and colonial historical trajectory

  • Understand the impact it

         has on others

LISTENING SKILLS

  • Identify listening vs. hearing

  • Responding vs. reacting

  • Be a witness to and honor someone’s story

  • Avoid running away from the feelings that someone’s story evokes

  • Move out of the intellectual realm

  • A communal ritual act to center and gather attention and energy

  • Sensitive and responsive to personal and interpersonal needs

  • Create space safe enough so people dare to be brave

  • While allowing for uncomfortability
